Do you need a new foundation wall, or can yours be fixed?
Foundation block wall installation in Manchester, NH means laying concrete block on poured concrete footings to make a basement wall that holds back the soil around it, with steel and grout in the block and drainage and water protection on the outside.
Most people call us because they're adding on, or because an old basement wall is leaning, cracking or letting water in. If the old wall can be saved I'll tell you, and foundation repair may be all you need. When it can't, the price mostly turns on the length and height of the wall, what we find under the footing, which water protection your site needs and how easily a machine can reach the hole. The schedule turns on the permit side with your city, the weather for digging and pouring, and the wait for bracing or floor framing before the soil goes back. The written estimate lays out what I'd build for your wall and why, so you're not guessing.
How do you know it's time for a new foundation wall?
A wall leaning inward
If an old block wall bows in or a long crack runs along its middle, the soil outside is usually pushing harder than the wall can take, often because water is trapped behind it. Left alone, the lean tends to grow, and a wall that keeps moving takes more work to fix the longer it goes.
Water on the basement floor
Puddles after rain or a damp line along the bottom of the wall usually mean water is reaching the block and has nowhere to drain. That wetness wears on the mortar and on whatever you store down there, and the cause won't go away by itself.
Plans for an addition
Sometimes the sign is a set of drawings, because an addition or a new basement needs a wall built for it from the footing up. Settling the footing, drainage and water protection early keeps them from turning into surprises once the hole is dug.
How we build a foundation block wall
I start by looking at the soil where the footing will go, because the wall is only as good as what it sits on. We dig below the frost line to undisturbed soil so freezing ground can't heave the footing, and where that soil is soft we take it out and replace it with compacted soil, gravel or concrete before we pour. Then we lay the block, set steel in the cores and grout them, either just the cores holding steel or every core, as the plans call for. Before any soil goes back, we put on the water protection and the drainage, and I pick both for your site, not out of habit. We hold the backfill until the wall is braced or the floor above is framed, so the new wall isn't pushed before it's ready, and the finished work is backed by our satisfaction guarantee.
A new foundation means the yard around the house gets dug up, so it's a good time to plan what goes back on top. We handle walkway construction with the ground sloped away from the house so rain doesn't run toward your new wall, and outdoor kitchen masonry once the backfill has had time to settle.
Coating on the block
A coating is sprayed or rolled onto the outside face of the block, and it does its job well when the wall is clean and dry as it goes on. How well it holds depends a lot on the prep and the hands applying it, which is why we take our time on that part.
Sheet membrane or panels
Membranes and panels depend less on workmanship and surface prep than coatings, and many hold up better if the foundation settles or moves later. Where there's a real chance of water pushing on the wall, that's the side I lean toward.

What happens after you call about a foundation wall in Manchester?
Here's how a foundation wall job runs from your side, from the first call to the day we walk the finished wall together.
Call or send the form
You call (603) 314-0526 or send a message, and we set a time for me to come out. Have any plans handy, and anything you know about water in the basement.
I come out and look
I look at the soil, the water and any old wall, and hunt down what's causing the problem. You get a written plan of what I'd build and why, and if a smaller fix will do, I'll say so.
We build, then walk it
Once you say go, we sort out the permit side with your city, build the wall and hold the backfill until the wall is ready for it. When it's done, I walk the finished job with you.
Why Manchester owners call us for foundation walls
The one who quotes it builds it
I come out to see the job and write the estimate, and I'm on the crew that does the work. What we talk through in your yard is what gets built, with nothing lost between a salesman and a crew.
Learned on a lot of older buildings
I learned the trade doing upkeep on older buildings for a property management company, and we started this business in 2023. That work taught me to find out why a wall failed before deciding what to build in its place.
Licensed and insured on every dig
We're licensed and fully insured. That matters on this job, because there's an open excavation and a lot of heavy block right beside your house.
Up to date on the code change
Through December 31, 2026, New Hampshire permit requests can follow either the older or the updated building code, and from January 1, 2027 they all follow the updated one. If your wall is planned around the new year, I check which applies before we file so the plans match what the city reviews.
If you've got plans, a leaning wall or water you can't explain, send us the details or call (603) 314-0526 and I'll come take a look.
Building a foundation wall in Manchester and nearby cities
New Hampshire's state building code covers every building, including alterations and repairs to existing ones, so a wall under a new addition and a wall replaced under an old house both fall under it. In Manchester, the city's Building Division handles plan review and permit approval and takes building permit applications, so it's the office that decides whether your wall needs a permit. I check with them before any work starts, and when the job needs a permit, we take care of the paperwork.
We're based in Manchester and work in many of the cities around it, including some just over the line in Massachusetts. A lot of what we see is older houses getting an addition or a tired basement wall replaced, and we do the same work in Bedford and Londonderry, checking with each city's building office first.
Questions about foundation block walls in Manchester
How much does a block foundation wall cost in Manchester, NH?
There's no set price until I've seen the site, because a foundation wall is priced on what's under it and around it. Soft soil under the footing that has to come out, a membrane instead of a coating, every core grouted instead of some, and tight access for equipment all raise the cost, while firm native soil and an open site keep it down. I'll put your figure in writing after I've walked it with you.
Do I need dampproofing or waterproofing on a block foundation wall?
Building codes typically call for dampproofing where water drains freely through gravel backfill into a drain at the footing, and waterproofing where trapped groundwater may push on the wall. A high water table or backfill that drains poorly, like heavy clay, can build that push, so I look at your site before choosing. If you've had water in the basement before, tell me, because it helps.
Why does drainage around a foundation wall matter?
Drainage takes pressure off the wall, which lowers the chance of cracks and of water getting in if the coating ever fails. A layer of gravel against the wall lets water fall to the footing, where a perforated pipe carries it away from the house. It's all buried once we backfill, so it's worth getting right the first time.
How long do you wait before backfilling a new foundation wall?
Soil should go back only after the wall is braced or the first floor is in place, because a wall designed to be held at the top can crack or even fail if it's pushed before then. Heavy machines like bulldozers or cranes should stay off the backfill too, unless the wall was designed for that load. The top layer should be soil that lets little water through, so less rain soaks in beside the wall.
What causes radon in New Hampshire homes, and can it come through the foundation?
Radon forms from small amounts of uranium in New Hampshire's granite and soil, and it can get into a home through the foundation. You can't see, smell or taste it, so testing is the only way to know if your house has it. Once the new wall is done and you're using the space, it's worth testing.
How do I know if my old block foundation wall needs replacing or just repair?
You find out by tracking down what's pushing on the wall or wetting it, because the cause decides the fix more than the crack does. Plenty of walls I look at need the water sorted out and some foundation repair rather than a new wall, and I'd rather tell you that than sell you more. If the wall has moved too far to trust, I'll show you why and what a new one involves.
Work that often follows a new foundation
Once the house work is done, a masonry outdoor kitchen on its own footing gives you a grill and counter space built to sit level for years.
A new walkway gives you a firm, level path from the driveway to the door, and it's simplest to plan while the ground is already open.
